Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, what makes it so special?

jamaican blue mountain coffee

We have just received a batch of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee here at the Edgcumbes Roastery! Some has now been roasted and is bagged up ready for you to jamaica blue mountain coffeebuy and enjoy! But you may have noticed that there is quite a difference in price between this coffee and our others… so why exactly is that?

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is valued for its naturally sweet taste and lack of bitterness which is achieved from the location it is grown in. This coffee can only be grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica which are the longest mountain range in the country. The coffee plants are grown between 2,000 and 5,000 feet above sea level, as the higher slopes of the mountains are preserved as forest. The soil in this area is very rich and also the climate is cool with high rainfall. It is this combination of soil and climate which is considered ideal for the coffee. Over the past few decades this coffee has become very popular, making it one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world. Because of this Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee can only be labelled with that name once certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. Due to the limited area it can be grown in it means this coffee is a lot more expensive than other coffee varieties and is a real treat for any coffee lovers!

Peaberry bean Vs regular coffee bean

The type of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee that we have roasted here at Edgcumbes is also peaberry. This means the coffee bean is smaller and denser than the usual ‘flat’ coffee bean and enthusiasts believe that they are noticeably sweeter. Usually coffee beans grow two to a fruit, flat against each other. But this is not the case with the peaberry coffee bean, there is only one bean that grows inside the fruit meaning it has more space. This only occurs to around 5% of all coffee beans harvested and because they roast differently to the usual flat beans the high-grade peaberry beans are separated out.

Hopefully this now explains why the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is such a valuable coffee, as the regulations that are imposed on this type of coffee means that the unique flavour is not lost through over farming or through falsely using the valuable name.

We hope you enjoy our Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee that we have roasted here at Edgcumbes – you can buy it here or at our EDGE shop! Just let us know if you have any further questions about this speciality coffee or how you found the unique sweet taste.
