Edgcumbes have been a registered supplier of Fair Trade products for over ten years. We uncompromisingly support the ethos behind the Fair Trade Foundation and have confidence in the quality and consistency of all our products. Fair Trade Coffee So what exactly is Fair Trade Coffee? Fair Trade coffee is not grown as Fair Trade coffee but is bought as a Fair Trade coffee. A farmer who sells his green coffee beans to a Co-op with Fair Trade Membership is guaranteed a higher price for his beans. Not only that, he and his family benefit from better medical facilities, subsidised food and clothing and decent schooling. The larger plantations as well as the co-operatives supply this. How is this financially sustained? The Fair Trade Foundation, its paying members and the coffee roasters who pay a premium for the green coffee beans and lastly you as the end user, provide the extra money needed. Until recent rises in coffee prices, the price paid was up to double the price of non-Fair Trade coffee. So what does this achieve? Coffee bean growing can be a hard life and not always a financially rewarding one. It takes four to five years for a tree to start producing beans and one tree will only produce about three kilograms of beans a year, so you are going to need a lot of trees. The trees last around 20/25 years at their best and therefore have to be replaced accordingly. The Fair Trade Foundation provides extra income for the farmers in order to improve and maintain their farms and also to feed, clothe and educate their families. Around twenty million farmers are growing coffee around the world and many of them have no guarantee that when they plant or pick their crop that they will receive a decent price and may have to borrow money at high interest rates to invest in production and take care of their families. In turn this causes a far lower level and unethical way of living and an opportunity for unscrupulous money lenders. Fair Trade Tea Edgcumbes Fair Trade tea comes from the Kibena tea estate in the Iringa district of southern Tanzania. Kibena is a modern plantation and tea factory . It was set up by the Commonwealth Development Co-operation and provides development in a disadvantaged area. Benefits to workers at Kibena:
Kibena workers, in conjunction with the company management, agree how the Fairtrade premium will be spent. Last year they decided to build a school. What Fairtrade means to Kibena Tea workers: "My message to the buyers in the UK and the European Countries is that I encourage and urge them to buy more tea from Kibena, so that we can benefit out of the Fairtrade and the premium which comes out of that". Joyce Mfumbilwa, tea plucking supervisor (Information supplied by Traidcraft) The Kibena Tea Estate employs about 430 men and women permanently on the plantation. Another 100 work in the factory. The extra benefits from Fair Trade are used for much needed community and social development projects. There were no schools in the immediate area until the estate built a primary school. The government provided the teachers and the Fair Trade premium was used to provide the school with desks, pencils, books and other equipment. As well as this two new social/recreation halls have been built. The previous buildings were very basic and lacking any amenities. The new halls are larger and more modern. They contain good toilet facilities, basic shopping facilities, TV and video, and will be used for social and educational purposes.
