The British have always had a love affair with chocolate, whether is it chocolate bars or drinks.  No other food source is so regularly described as passionate or addictive.  The botanical name for cocoa is "Theobroma Cacoa" with Theobroma meaning 'God food'.

The cocoa bean and chocolate itself has had a long and interesting history with the human race.  Starting life as a drink only for the rich and noble, cocoa beans were used as currency amongst all nations – 100 cocoa beans could buy you a slave, 12 beans buying you the services of a courtesan.  Casanova reportedly drank cocoa before bedding his conquests due to its aphrodisiac qualities and Emporer Montezuma of Mexico drank nothing but chocolate – up to fifty goblets a day –  like Casanova, before entering his harem..

For centuries it was considered a beverage predominantly for men until the seventeenth century when it was recognised to be an appropriate drink for children.  It had many different additions: milk, wine, beer, sweeteners and spices.

Today drinking chocolate is luckily readily available to everyone, providing a rich, satisfying, mood enhancing warm drink.  We should drink it without any guilt – beyond the froth, cocoa teems with antioxidants that prevent cancer.  According to scientists, comparing the chemical anti-cancer activity in beverages known to contain antioxidants, they have found that cocoa has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine and up to three times those found in green tea.

There has been a marked increase in British taste buds moving away from sweet milky chocolate drinks, towards a more continental, rich flavour.  The high cocoa content make the drink a richer and more satisfying drink.

At Edgcumbes we have increased our range to satisfy every requirement – from the standard catering variety mixed with water ( Low calorie available) to Fair Trade and our sublime organic Green & Black.  We offer our drinking chocolate packed in a variety of formats:
